Roll Over

Dear Jacob,

You did it! This morning you rolled over for the first time, and your daddy and I were both there to see it. We have been trying to put you on your tummy more, even though you don’t really like it. So this morning when you woke up as I was getting ready for work, your daddy put you on your tummy in the living room. You usually protest about it, but this morning you figured out how to do something about it. You twisted your little body around, and after a great effort you rolled yourself over. Before we know it, you will be rolling yourself around all over the house.

Have I ever told you what a great man your daddy is? Not only did he get me exactly what I wanted for my birthday, he also cleaned up the house while I was at work Wednesday morning. He tidied up, vacuumed, washed the dishes, cleaned the counters, folded the laundry, and washed and folded your clothes. What a great guy!

We had fun on my birthday. We went out to dinner, and then had a party with my friends. You weren’t too sure about having all those people over, and got a little bit upset. I think you were just tired because you didn’t take a good afternoon nap.

We think you are having a growth spurt because you have been REALLY hungry lately. Maybe sometime soon we will have to think about introducing you to solid foods. That will be an adventure.

Tonight we are going to your daddy’s mission reunion. He went to the Uruguay Montevideo mission, and his mission president lives in Bountiful. So each year around General Conference time (in April and October) we go to the reunion. The last time we went I was very pregnant, so this time we get to take you with us. So this time I will at least get to watch you, which will give me something to do since I don’t know anyone there.

Happy Birthday to Mommy!

Dear Jacob,

Today is my birthday, and I can’t believe that I am thirty years old today. Somehow I still feel as if I am about 25, and most people actually guess that I am still in my twenties. Maybe it’s because I have you and your daddy to keep me young.

You seemed to enjoy one of my birthday cards almost as much as I did!

I am glad that I have accomplished some of the goals that I set for myself when I was younger. I knew that I wanted to be married and have kids before I was thirty. I’m so glad I found your daddy, and we are very happy to have you with us. I also set some educational goals, and now I have a Bachelors degree as well as a Masters degree, which I am proud of.

I think today is going to be a good day. So far I have only opened one birthday present, but it will definitely be the best one. Your daddy bought me a Kitchen Aid mixer for my birthday, and I am SO excited! It makes me want to get out my recipes and start baking. Last night Daddy laughed and told me that I am a recipe hoarder, and I suppose it’s true. When I finally get to stay home with you all the time, I’m sure it will be great fun to try out new recipes each week.

Last night Daddy and I went to a church activity where a guest speaker talked about “Parenting with Love and Logic”. We learned a lot, and I’m glad we went. We want to be great parents, but I’m sure that will take time and practice. Hopefully you can be as patient with us and we will try to be with you.

Yesterday Joe had an interview in Salt Lake City. We also found out this week that the full-time person in his department has resigned. So there is a chance that they could hire your daddy to work here at UVSC. Hopefully he will get something full time soon! That makes me excited.

You are growing so fast! It seems that all of the sudden none of the clothes you have been wearing fit anymore! Your motor coordination is also getting better. Now you can pull your binky out of your mouth on purpose, and actually put it back in sometimes. You like to hold toys and other objects in your hands, and of course put them in your mouth.

Daddy says that he often sits you up in one of our rocking chairs, and you are content to sit there and play for twenty minutes at a time. Before we know it, you will be sitting up on your own… and rolling all over the house. Won’t that be fun!

I have taken you for walks in the stroller for the past couple of days, and you seem to enjoy it. Most often we will walk around the cemetery near our house because the pavement is smoother than most of the sidewalks nearby. It is a nice, quiet place to walk. The only time you didn’t like it when we went walking was on Monday night, when I ended up taking you for a walk when it was almost dark outside. You were great for a while, but then you were getting hungry… and maybe cold or scared. I couldn’t stand to listen to you cry, so I picked you up and carried you home in one arm while pushing the stroller with the other. You stopped crying as soon as I picked you up, so I guess you must like me or something. :o)

Family Photos, Fall 2006

Dear Jacob,

Well, we have had our first official family photos taken. On Saturday we drove up Provo Canyon to a church-owned family camp called Aspen Grove, and my friend Cari took some photos for us. It was really pretty in the canyon, and the leaves are just starting to change. I love this time of year. It rained a lot during the past week, but Saturday was a gorgeous day.

Here are some of my favorite pictures:

Later on Saturday daddy was working on the attic, so I took you with me to the Relief Society session of general conference. You were asleep when we arrived, and got pretty upset when you woke up not knowing where you were. But as soon as I fed you and held you, then everything was o.k. The ladies at our table were all talking, and you tried to join in. They all thought you were adorable. Then we watched the broadcast in the chapel, and you fell asleep in my arms. I love holding you when you are asleep. It gives me such a peaceful, happy feeling.

On Sunday evening your grandparents dropped by to spent the night on their way to California. They were surprised by how much you have grown. They had fun holding you and playing with you. I can tell that like me, Grandpa and Grandma Heiner absolutely adore you.

In the last week we noticed that you have figured out how to bounce yourself in your bouncy chair. You just kick your little left leg until the chair gets going. Then you stop kicking until the chair stops moving. Then you start kicking again. What a smart boy you are!

Daddy and I have also started to sign to you. I think that you are starting to understand the sign for milk because whenever we make that sign, you get excited. It will be nice to be able to communicate with you before you learn to talk, like Aunt Jeanette did with Kaylee. Then we will know what you need, and how to make you happy.

Over the Weekend

Dear Jacob,

We had a cold and rainy weekend. On Saturday and Sunday morning when you woke up we could hear you just babbling away. It was so cute, and it made us smile. So daddy went and got you and brought you into our room, and we cuddled and played with you. Getting to see you awake in the morning is one of my favorite parts of the weekend.

On Saturday we spent the morning cleaning upstairs while daddy worked on changing the car’s oil. Then we went shopping and found a cute button up shirt for you. We are going to have you wear it when we have my friend Cari take our family picture this weekend. Then on Sunday we had you wear it to church, and you were adorable.

Sunday evening we had some friends over for dinner after church. They (Jeff & Brancy Davis) are expecting a baby boy in October, so maybe you and he will be friends. We had a great time talking to them and telling them the story of how we met, and what it is like to have a new baby.

Doctor, Doctor, give me the news!

Dear Jacob,

You have survived another doctor appointment. It’s actually not that bad, except for the shots. Yesterday I drove from work to the doctor’s office, where I met you and daddy. They called us back to a room, and then the nurse came to weigh and measure you. In the past couple of months you sure have grown! You now weigh 14lbs 3 ounces, and are 25 inches tall. That puts you at the 50th percentile for you weight, and the 70th percentile for your height. So you are doing really well.

Then the nurse came and gave you your shots. Last time you got shots I wasn’t in the room, but this time I stayed. Daddy held your hands and comforted you while the nurse held your legs down and gave you two shots in each leg. You cried out in pain, and when they were done I took you from your daddy and comforted you. Of all your different cries, the pain-cry is the one that makes me feel horrible. I just want to make everything better and take the pain away.

After a couple of minutes you stopped crying, and the doctor came and checked you out. It seems that you are not actually growing a tooth. The doctor explained to us that your mouth is more sensitive than your hands right now, so that is why you put everything in there. He told us you are thriving, and he also said that you were adorable. That is quite a compliment, considering that he sees babies and children all day. He answered our questions, and told us that we were doing a great job as parents. It’s always nice to hear that, especially since you are our first baby and we are still learning.

After the doctor’s appointment I took you home, and daddy went to work. After I fed you a bottle, you fell fast asleep. So I went outside and weeded the strawberry patch in our garden. I took our new baby monitor with me so I could come inside when you needed me. It started to get cloudy and nasty outside, and I felt some rain drops so then I came inside. You were still asleep, so I put in a workout video and did that for a while. Then you woke up, and I played with you for a while (see your Band-Aids in this picture?).

Daddy came home, and we had dinner. You were pretty cranky last night, but I am sure it is because your legs hurt. So we gave you some Tylenol and did our best to comfort you. Around 9 pm you fell asleep, and didn’t wake up until after I had already left for work this morning. It is so great that you can sleep through the night now. Daddy and I really appreciate it!

Jacob at Four Months

Dear Jacob,

You just turned four months old. It is hard for me to imagine that just a year ago we discovered that we were going to have a baby. I know that it is such a cliché, but I can’t believe how quickly time is passing and how fast you are growing. At the same time, it feels as though you have been a part of me forever. I cannot conceive of a time when you were not in existence. When I think back on the past, before you were born, I feel your presence lurking behind the scenes. I am not sure how to reconcile these two conflicting feelings-- of you having just been born, yet having been here forever.

You are such a happy and contented boy. I love the way your face lights up when you smile, and I especially love that you do it whenever your daddy or I play or talk to you. Sometimes when you are upset or sad, all we have to do is talk to you and then you try to smile at the same time you are complaining to us. It is really adorable.
You love looking at the world around you. Whenever we take you for a walk in the Snugli, you look around at the world with your big eyes. You seem to be very inquisitive and curious about your environment, and I’m sure you will be quite the explorer as soon as you can move yourself around. For now you are content to explore your world by putting anything and everything into your mouth.

You sleep at night as well as I could ever hope for a 4 month old to sleep. You consistently sleep at night from 9:30 pm to 7:00am, waking up occasionally to have daddy give you back your binky, but falling right back to sleep You sleep with your arms extended to the sides, and it makes me wonder if you are flying in your dreams. Your beautiful little face is one of the last things that I see before I go to bed, and I always give you a kiss before I leave in the morning. When you wake up, you greet the day with enthusiastic babbling. As soon as we come to get you from your crib, you give us the biggest smile and kick your legs excitedly. Most of the time you have kicked off your covers during the night, and we sometimes find you with your feet straight up in the air. I love my Mr. Happy Pants.

I love that you are starting to vocalize more. It is so fun to have “conversations” with you, and listen as you test out your voice. You get so excited when you babble, it is adorable. Sometimes you seem to want to talk to us so badly, and it makes me wonder what you would tell us if you could.

We love you so much, and are so glad that you are a part of our lives. You are such a sweetheart, and I’m glad I get to watch you grow.

The Kicker Foot

Dear Jacob,

Today at work I was working at my computer, and your dad was instant messaging me from home. I told him that I missed my baby today, and I asked him what you were doing. Then he emailed me a couple of pictures of you sitting in your bouncy chair, gnawing on your plastic keys. It made me smile, and made me sad all at the same time.

We think you are definitely growing a tooth. Yesterday I discovered that I could feel a little bump on your gums, and we can see a white spot. That explains why you have been drooling so much lately. It also provides a possible explanation for you sticking your tongue out at us. You have been sticking out your tongue a lot the past couple of days, and I think you are trying to feel your tooth with your tongue. I wonder if it feels weird to be growing teeth in your little mouth. The good thing is that so far it doesn’t seem to be causing you too much pain.

I have also forgotten to mention your kicker foot. Ever since you were born, you have had a very active left leg. You kick both of your legs, but your left one seems to get kicking twice as much as your right one. So we affectionately call it your kicker foot, and its fun to watch you when you get excited because that is when it really gets going. I’m sure that it is the foot that you kicked me with the most when I was pregnant with you. Daddy used to play a game with you before you were born called the bump-bump game. He would push on my belly and say “bump-bump!” Then he would put his hand on my belly and wait for you to kick back at him. He always got a kick out of it when you kicked back at him.

Jacob the Pooh

Dear Jacob,

It was nice to stay home this weekend and spend some time together as a family. Sometimes I am afraid that I am missing out because I don’t get to stay home with you all day. I don’t want to miss your first word, your first step, or any of the other cute things that might happen while I am away at work. So the weekends are a fun time for me to be with you and daddy all day.

Saturday we slept in a little, which was nice. We could tell when you were awake, because you started talking to yourself in your bed. That is what you do most mornings, and I love it. So I went and got you and brought you to Mommy and Daddy’s bed. I love how happy you are in the morning. I often find you in your bed, smiling wide and holding your legs straight up in the air. We had fun laying there with you in our bed, trying to make you smile and playing with you.

A little later, after we were showered and dressed, we went to Costco and bought a whole bunch of stuff. We bought some cute, warm pajamas for you and some fun nightlights. They will flash a bunch of colors, or stay whatever color or brightness you choose. They will be nice to have since they have no bulbs that might break or need replacing.

After we went shopping, we went out for lunch at Los Hermanos (which is a Mexican restaurant not far from home). You just sat in your car seat and played with your toys. It seems that you are trying to put everything in your mouth recently. This weekend you had fun playing with my stuffed giraffe (and by playing, I mean trying to put its head or legs into your mouth. We have noticed a white spot on your bottom gum, and I’m sure you will be getting a tooth soon.

It was kind of cloudy Saturday, so then we watched a movie that I brought home from the library. Then daddy worked on putting some insulation that we had bought in the attic, and I cleaned in the kitchen and worked on dinner. I got to take care of you most of the day, which was fun.

On Sunday we went to our regional stake conference. You were good the entire time, even when I went to the mother’s room to feed you. When we got home we took some pictures of you in the cute Winnie the Pooh outfit we dressed you in. You are getting SO good at holding your head up when we put you on your stomach. Then I tried a couple of different outfits on you to see which ones would fit you now. I guess you could say I played “dress up” with you.

After lunch Sunday you were getting cranky. I could tell you were tired, so I held you in my arms and you fell fast asleep. So I took you downstairs and you took a nap with me on Mommy’s bed. It was really nice. You look so adorable when you are asleep.

Daddy made a delicious pot roast for dinner, and while we ate you talked to us. This weekend you have been a lot more vocal. You seem to want to talk to us so badly, and I sometimes wonder what you would say if you could. In the meantime, we like to have little “conversations” with you and listen to you tell us stories.

When it cooled down in the evening, we all went on a walk. Daddy carried you in the Snugli, and we walked around the cemetery. It was a nice evening, and we had fun walking and talking together.

Laundry Boy

Dear Jacob,

I am glad this week is over! I am looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow. You actually slept until 7:30am Thursday morning, which was really nice. Lately you have been waking up around 4am, so I was surprised when I woke up before you did.

I got you to laugh again this week, which was fun. I was carrying you around in your bouncy chair, and I was bouncing you up and down and making silly noises and you laughed at me. It was great. I also took you for a walk in your Snugli yesterday. It has been too hot to go out much until now, and you seemed to enjoy looking around at everything while we walked around the cemetery near our house. I held your little hands as I carried you in front of me, and you seemed to be very content. It was nice to go out and get some fresh air. It has been cloudy the past few days, and it started to get windy after a while, so we went home. Now that the weather is nice, I will have to take you for walks more often.

Daddy tells me that you have been helping him with the laundry this week. What a great helper!

I caught you taking a little snooze today with your giraffe. You are such a cutie.

First Weekend in SV

Dear Jacob,

What a weekend! I left work early on Friday to help Daddy pack for our trip to Star Valley. We got the car all packed, and I was amazed that for such a little person, you sure need a lot of stuff. I think we packed twice as much stuff as we usually do. :o) I gave Daddy a haircut, and then gave you a bath. Then we got in the car and headed north.

We only drove to Logan on Friday and stayed with Uncle Greg and Aunt Jeanette. They needed our help because they were returning my parents’ camping trailer, and their truck would only fit 3 people. So they needed us to take either Kaylee or Autumn in our car to Star Valley. Plus my parents were giving Jeanette and Greg their old pickup truck, so they would be able to take everyone home.

It took us twice as long as it normally does to get to Logan because of all the traffic. I guess we should have expected it on Labor Day weekend, but we thought we left early enough to avoid the worst of it. We were in traffic so long that I ended up feeding you a bottle in your carseat, which worked out better than I expected.

By the time we got to Logan, Daddy and I were hungry so we stopped at Chili’s for dinner. You were happy to get out of your carseat for a while, and we had a good dinner. Then we went to Jeanette and Greg’s house. We had a good time at their house that evening, even if we had to keep intercepting your cousin Autumn. She seemed to think that your binky belonged to her, and would try to take away from you. She is crawling around, which makes her much more mobile than you. She also doesn’t quite understand that you are too little to play with like she plays with her older sister Kaylee. She tried once or twice to crawl over you or lean on you, but your daddy and I kept you safe. :o)

We slept in the basement of the Kirkham’s house, and the next morning we headed to Star Valley. Your cousin Kaylee rode with us in our car. We fed you before we left, and when we were about 20 minutes down the road you pooped in your diaper. We could smell you from the front seat! So we stopped in Preston, ID to change your diaper. We were trying to stay with Jeanette, Greg and Autumn in their truck, but we lost them then. We didn’t catch up with them until we were nearly to Grandpa and Grandma Heiner’s house.

Grandpa and Grandma Heiner were so happy to see you. They both were surprised at how much you have grown, and what a big boy you have become. Aunt Deanna came over that afternoon, and she brought your cousins Marissa and Braydon with her. Braydon is walking now, so he wasn’t interested in crawling over you. He did think that the toys we brought for you were pretty fascinating though, and you enjoyed some of the toys that were at Grandma’s house.

You did great at Grandpa and Grandma’s, even though you aren’t used to having that many people around or being in such a noisy place. Daddy helped Grandpa and Grandma with their computers, and I mostly just talked with my family and watched them play with you. It was fun. Grandpa and Grandma held you as much as they could and commented on what a cutie you were.

On Sunday we went to church with my parents and the Kirkhams. Since Grandpa is in the Bishopric and Grandma leads the music, we didn’t get to sit with them. But we made faces at them, and you got bored with the meeting and fell asleep.

After church, Great-Grandpa and Great-Grandma Heiner came over for dinner (and Aunt Deanna and her kids). Your Great-Grandparents had never met you before, so they were excited to see you. They both had a good time holding you, and said that you were a handsome boy. Here are some pictures of you with them:

We also had some pictures of our little family taken. We don’t usually have someone else around to take a picture of us as a family, so it was nice to have Grandpa Heiner take our picture. Here is a pretty nice picture of us:

We also took a four generation photo, and one with all the boys:

We took a lot of pictures this weekend, which was fun. We also took some short video clips of you. One exciting thing that happened was that you gave us your first really good laugh. Your Aunt Deanna was saying peek-a-boo at you and you laughed and laughed. It was SO cute, and it made my heart very happy to hear your adorable little laugh.
Monday we had to head home. We decided to drive through Evanston, Wyoming this time which turned out to be a bad idea. Apparently there was a huge traffic accident on the Wyoming/Utah border and the freeway was like a parking lot. So we stopped in Evanston to eat and get a map at Wal-Mart. We shunned the freeway and took some little back roads and almost got lost, but we made it to Coalville and the freeway eventually. It went pretty well from there. But it took us 2 hours longer to get home than it normally does. By the time we got home, you were pretty tired of being in your carseat. I spent most of the end of the trip in the backseat with you, trying to keep you amused. We were all pretty tired, and glad to be home.

It seems that you have caught another cold this weekend. You have had a bit of a stuffy nose, but I’m sure you will get better soon. Your daddy and I love you so much, and we enjoy playing with and taking care of our Bubby.
